Research suggests that placebos work, in part, by blocking pain signals in the spinal cord from arriving at the brain in the first place.

Butterbur has been used by generations of herbalists as a potent way of treating the itchy eyes and runny noses of hay fever sufferers. One night as Chris Banting was undressing for bed, he was surprised when his wife Helen pointed out to him that the back of his right calf was a worrying scarlet colour.
