At every meal, you should have a combination of protein, fat, and carbohydrates.  The largest proportion of the foods a diabetic will eat fall into the carbohydrate category. Carbohydrates are be found in:
  • Beans
  • Grains
  • Dairy [roducts
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
In order to reduce blood sugar levels and lose weight, it is absolutely necessary to count and control carbohydrates in your diet. Your dietician will provide you with the number of carbohydrates that you can have at each meal,  Some carbohydrate foods are better choices than others. Choose whole grains, non-starchy vegetables,  and berries whenever possible. Eating carbohydrate foods that are high in fiber can help to reduce your blood sugar levels and will keep you feeling full for longer. .

At each meal, a  moderate amount of protein will help counter-act the carbohydrate’s effect of raising blood sugars.  Protein will also sustain your energy longer, and you will not become hungry as quickly if you did not include protein.

Following a healthy dietary plan with the correct amount of carbohydrates at each meal combined with moderate amounts of protein can help you manage your diabetes and lose weight.  If you also make time for exercise every day, you are sure to achieve your goals.
