Prevent and Treat Heartburn and Acid Reflux

The most common digestive disorder people experience is heartburn, which is highly associated with acid reflux. Understanding how heartburn occurs is essential to those diagnosed with acid reflux. Eating habits or lifestyle factors should be changed to prevent heartburn associated with acid reflux. Unhealthy eating or eating excessively at one time can cause improper movement of the gastric juices in the lower portion of the esophagus, causing possible heartburn to occur.

Effective Home Remedies for Acid Reflux

Are you fond of eating junk foods, protein-rich foods, and processed foods? If you are, you are a candidate for an acid reflux problem. Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, is caused by a disturbance in the acid-alkaline condition in the stomach. Eating specific acid foods that are hard to digest induces stomach spasms or twitching which causes the cardiac sphincter, the opening between the esophagus and stomach, to open for acid wastes to flow up to your esophagus causing an irritation. This irritation, if not controlled, can lead to ulcers.

Acid Reflux Natural Remedy: Positional Therapy

Acid reflux is a chronic health condition. When we eat, the contents in the stomach normally proceed into the intestines with the aid of digestive muscle contractions. However, for those who have acid reflux disease, the digestive contents travel back into the esophagus, and since the digestive materials contain acids, a patient suffers from inflammation in the throat which may be associated with pains in the abdomen and breastbone. Other symptoms include dyspepsia, vomiting, regurgitation, and respiratory problems.

A Natural Acid Reflux Remedy: Apple Cider Vinegar

There are a large number of people suffering from acid reflux or the GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease). This usually happens when the LES or the lower esophageal sphincter does not function properly. The contents of the stomach, particularly the liquid, go back to the esophagus. The liquid contains pepsin and stomach acids. The pepsin digests proteins and the acid from the stomach burns the walls of the esophagus causing heartburn.

Beware of Antiacid Drugs

Prolonged use of antiacid drugs can cause serious health problems, says David Brownstein,
MD.
Proton pump inhibiters (PPI’s) are widely prescribed antacid medications. Examples of PPI’s include: Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid, Aciphex, and Protonix. In fact, in 2009, over 21 million U.S. adults were prescribed a PPI and sales of PPI’s grew to over $13 billion globally. PPI’s work by poisoning the stomach’s proton pump. The end result of PPI use is to inhibit stomach acid secretion.

PPI’s are only indicated for a short time period—generally a few weeks. Prolonged use of PPI’s are associated with a host of serious adverse effects including vitamin B12 deficiency and pernicious anemia, bone fractures, and C. difficile infections. Now we can add heart attacks to the list of problems PPI’s cause. Read more

10 Home Remedies for Acid Reflux

For fast-acting relief and long-term results, try these home remedies for acid reflux, says Edward Group.
Acid reflux is not a nice feeling. Food and acid splash into the esophagus (the muscular tube that takes food after swallowing into the stomach) causing uncomfortable reactions from belching to heartburn and in some severe cases, chest pains. Some individuals have experienced pain so intense they thought they were having a heart attack.

If a person experiences acid reflux on a regular basis, the acids will irritate the esophagus and this can advance to scarring, ulceration, inflammation and hemorrhaging.

According to authors and doctors F. Balch, M.D. and Mark Stengler, N.D., if acid reflux persists for a very long period of time is may even lead to esophageal cancer.

Here are a few of my favorite home remedies for acid reflux: Read more
