Cholesterol Drugs Increase Breast Cancer Risk
Statins increase breast cancer risk by 200%, according to a new study.
Why do one in seven women in the U.S. have breast cancer? Unfortunately, the Powers-That-Be are too busy prescribing chemotherapy, surgery and radiation instead of searching for the underlying reasons why so many U.S. women are suffering and dying with breast cancer. Unless we stop the flow of money to the Powers-That-Be, which includes the American Cancer Society and the Koman Foundation, there will never be progress made in this terrible illness.
Why do one in seven women have breast cancer? One reason is the use of synthetic hormones fed to animals and other synthetic hormones prescribed to women such as medroxyprogesterone including Provera. Another reason is statin medications. Read more

Protect Your Breasts with Vitamin D
To protect our breasts, Dr. Christiane Northrup recommends that every woman check her vitamin D level regularly and keep it in the optimal range.
There's a paradigm shift going on in medicine as new research reveals a far greater role for vitamin D. Vitamin D is not just for kids -- or the prevention of rickets. Optimal levels of Vitamin D (40-80 ng/ml) enhance the creation and functioning of healthy cells throughout the body. In addition to protecting the bones and boosting the immune system, studies show that Vitamin D helps prevent certain cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate, and colorectal.Exciting new research shows that in the U.S. alone, thousands of new cases of breast cancer could be prevented every year if more women had optimal levels of vitamin D.
A study conducted by Cedric Garland and other prominent vitamin D researchers determined that women with vitamin D levels above 52 ng/ml have half the risk of developing breast cancer as those with 13 ng/ml! Garland (et al) estimates that 58,000 new cases of breast cancer in the U.S. could be prevented per year by raising vitamin D levels to 52 ng/ml. Imagine what the global impact could be! Read more

Weight Training Benefits Breast Cancer Survivors
Breast cancer patients often suffer from a multitude of secondary complaints, such as insomnia, weight gain, chronic fatigue, depression, and anxiety. Exercise has been identified as a possible treatment for quality of life-limiting symptoms. However, aerobic exercise has only half the effect of strength training.
Weight training significantly improves the quality of life of women recently treated for breast cancer, according to a new study. Published in the journal Cancer, the study indicates six months of twice weekly exercise that improved strength and body composition was enough to result in improvements in the overall physical and emotional condition of the patients. This is the first randomized trial to study the effects of weight training on quality of life in breast cancer patients. Read more

Should You Perform a Breast Self-Examination?
Dr. Kate explains the pros and cons of doing your own breast examination.
Many of my patients have come in lately for their yearly check-ups, and as I do their breast exam, they confess that they haven’t been checking themselves as regularly as they ought to. But there isn’t really a clear answer as to whether or not women “should” perform breast self-exam (or BSE) on a regular basis. There are doctors on both sides of the debate, and if you search the web you’ll find a plethora of opinions. I tell my patients that there are two arguments to be made: Read more

Norwegian Study: Breast Cancer Rates Soar after Mammograms
Here's another reminder that almost all medical procedures carry some risk: In four Norwegian countries, breast cancer rates increased significantly after women there began undergoing mammography every two years. The women who chose to pass up bi-annual mammograms had 22% less breast cancer.
A report just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association's Archives of Internal Medicine (Arch Intern Med. 2008;168[21]:2302-2303) reaches a startling conclusion. Breast cancer rates increased significantly in four Norwegian counties after women there began getting mammograms every two years. In fact, according to background information in the study, the start of screening mammography programs throughout Europe has been associated with increased incidence of breast cancer. Read more

The Link between Bras and Breast Cancer
Is there really a link between tight-fitting bras and breast cancer? Medical researcher Syd Singer says the case is "open and shut."
If you didn't burn yours in the 'Sixties, you might want to put it away now. "Bras cause breast cancer. It's open and shut," says medical researcher Syd Singer.
The Singers became breast cancer sleuths in 1991. On the day Soma discovered a lump in her breast, the husband-wife team was studying the effects of Western medicine on Fijians. In the shower, Syd noticed that Soma's shoulders and breasts were outlined by dark red grooves. He remembered a puzzled Fijian woman asking his wife about her brassiere: "Doesn't it feel tight?"
"You get used to it," Soma had replied.
Could bras be constricting breast tissue, Syd wondered, hampering lymph drainage and causing degeneration? Read more
