6 Benefits of Yoga for Sleep Deprivation

Yoga is not only good for strength and flexibility, but Lowenna Waters says that it also benefits sleep deprivation.
It's a well known fact that sleep disorders such as insomnia are endemic in our stress-filled, caffeine-driven contemporary lifestyles. In a recent study, it was shown that Britons are the world's most 'sleep deprived' people, with 37 per cent of the population reporting that they regularly don't get enough shut eye.

The health implications of sleep deprivation are equally shocking. It's been shown that when the brain is starved of sleep, its synapses begin to be 'eaten' by other cells in the brain. What's more, a lack of sleep can trigger the release of a chemical in the brain that leads to Alzheimers disease, and even that it's physically 'as bad as smoking'. Read more

Following this 10-step guide to modern yoga can be a fantastic way to achieve and maintain the body you want.
Most people imagine that yoga is something gentle and mindful, not a form of exercise that will help shed excess pounds. But it’s also a fantastic way to get, and keep, the body you want.

There’s not just the anecdotal evidence of many yoga devotees who say it helps them stay trim and toned. Scientific research is increasingly backing up the link between yoga and weight loss.

Flexible Bodies, Flexible Arteries

Dr-Soran-Khalsa says the flexibility of your body correlates with the flexibility of your arteries.
Flexibility is one of the main aspects of physical fitness along with cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance. Most health clubs emphasize cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength, giving only an occasional class that will improve flexibility, such as yoga.

As we get older it is normal for our arteries to begin to become stiff. No one knows the exact cause of this stiffening but it begins to occur in middle age. It has been shown that higher levels of physical fitness seem to delay the the development of the age-associated stiffening of our arteries. We know that this stiffening of the walls of our arteries has been found to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease like heart attack and strokes as well as death. None of us want stiff arteries for it is just logical that blood will not flow as well in a stiff artery. Read more
