Dr. Edward Group reveals the health benefits of American ginseng.
Many people associate ginseng with regions in Asia, but there are actually several types of ginseng and a few of them grow in other areas of the world. One of my favorites, Panax quinquefolius, also known as American ginseng, has actually been enjoyed by Native Americans for centuries as a way to support energy, fertility, and digestion. The long, solid track record has prompted many people to add a ginseng supplement to their diet. Read more

One way to have fabulous skin is to eat more good fats, says Pamela Bofferding. By the way, if you still believe in the thoroughly discredited low-fat diet, you should know that fat is good for you.
Sometimes it’s not what you put on your body that makes the most difference, it’s what you put inside it. Fat has gotten a bad reputation, but it’s time to reconsider. Fats help keep your skin supple and soft, they ward off fine lines and wrinkles, and they give you a glow. Of course, you can’t just eat a box of Krispy Kremes and call it a day—when it comes to having great skin, not all fats are created equally. Read more

Big Pharma is not going to like this: New research has found that high cholesterol does not cause heart disease, so treating it with statins a waste of time (not to mention expensive and potentially dangerous).
Cholesterol does not cause heart disease in the elderly and trying to reduce it with drugs like statins is a waste of time, an international group of experts has claimed.
A review of research involving nearly 70,000 people found there was no link between what has traditionally been considered “bad” cholesterol and the premature deaths of over 60-year-olds from cardiovascular disease. Read more

A Japanese study found that omega-3 fatty acids can turns fat-storing cells into fat-burning cells.
Losing weight is often associated with eating less of certain foods, but a relatively recent study shows that people who add more omega-3s to their diet may shed more calories.
Researchers in Japan found that oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids turned “bad” fat cells into healthy ones that burn calories. That’s great news for people who are in their 40s and older, as “good” fat cells start to decrease around middle-age.
The findings may explain why people who eat a Japanese or Mediterranean diet rich in fish generally lead longer, leaner lives. Read more

Among the many benefits of coconut oil is that it helps with weight loss, says Jennifer Lea Reynolds
It’s estimated that over one-third of United States adults are obese, an often preventable issue that’s linked to some serious health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke. Many of these adults — maybe even you — are attempting to lose their excess weight; even those who fall into the “overweight” category or have a mere 5 pounds to lose are no stranger to trying to shed pounds.
Enter coconut oil. Sure, it’s been the center of debate; some argue that it increases the “bad” (LDL) cholesterol levels, while others maintain that it doesn’t cause these levels to spike at all. From much of the information that exists, more seems to favor the latter point. In fact, coconut oil is comprised of approximately 50% lauric acid, something that helps prevent heart problems, high cholesterol and hypertension — all things that can be experienced especially when you’re carrying excess weight.
Furthermore, the oil has been found to help people lose weight. Read more

There are certain foods in history that are known for their (somewhat) sexual qualities. These aphrodisiac foods make sense for the most part, but let’s face it — some of them just aren’t very sexy to eat. We aren’t JUST talking whipped cream and flavored lube here, people.
We decided to compile a list of some of the aphrodisiacs and rank them in order from BEST to WORST: Read more

You'll go bananas over this natural sleep remedy, says Pamela Bofferding.
We live in a world of constant stimulation: light from laptops and iPhones, noise pollution, and the stress of being so very connected all of the time. As well, insomnia could be caused by environmental influences. Luckily, there are lots of natural remedies, and if you are anything like myself, you have tried all of them. I’ve had success with melatonin, chamomile tea, valerian root, and even just a cup of nice, warm milk. But I’m always happy to add to my sleep remedy arsenal, so when I read about a banana and cinnamon tea meant to help you sleep, it sounded right up my alley. Read more
